The movie starts off with the childhood of Madhavan and Sree Devi. The story is built up slowly by establishing the characters of Madhavan and Sree Devi along with their families. Ashok (Madhavan) and Julie (Sree Devi) are childhood friends. Ashok is like a family member of Julie's family. They are very close to each other and they believe that friendship is above love. The public, however, has a different view of their platonic friendship. They do not have any love feelings towards each other. Julie's father (Manivannan) dies, Ashok brings Julie to his house and she stays along with his family.
Nandini (Jyotika) is from a rich family, Ashok falls in love with her and they get married. Julie's closeness to Madhavan at first annoys Nandhini but later she accepts it. Julie falls for her school correspondent's son Michael (Vineeth), a cricketer who is vying for a place in the Indian cricket team; Ashok happens to be his main rival. Ashok gets selected and Michael's father strikes a deal with Ashok that the Michael-Julie marriage will take place if Ashok steps down and lets Michael replace him. Ashok agrees to all the conditions of Michael's father for the sake of friendship. When Michael comes to know of this at the end, he restores the severed ties between them and the film ends on a happy note.
Madhavan has performed a very likeable and most natural character in this film and ends up in getting the sympathy of the audience. Although Jyotika enters the screen just before the interval, she has given a creditable performance. She has slimmed down so much and her costumes in this film are very attractive. Sree Devi is just adequate. Director Vikraman, with a simple and yet unconvincing basic storyline, had woven the scenes in such a way that he convinces us that the relationship between Sree Devi and Madhavan is just friendship and not love.
