A HEARTTHROB IN THE MAKING
maddyIrrespective of the box-office outcome of his just-released musical love-hate story, Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein, Madhavan has created a stir. He has critics, girls and an easygoing charm on his side. Guys who are perhaps envious of him dub Madhavan as chubby-cheeked, Shah Rukh-like and akin to a soda with too much fizz. Girls who adore him find Maddy (Gawd, how can you call him Madhavan?) cuddly, Shah Rukh-like (soooo cute) and akin to a soda full of the much-needed fizz.
Q: Having watched Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein in a Mumbai theatre along with the janta, what would you say was the audience reaction to the film?
A: Very encouraging. I was very flattered - an excerpt from his interview for TNT Movies - www.thenewspapertoday.com

REHNAA HAI TERRE DIL MEIN - MAD MAD MADHAVAN

RunSeldom have I looked at a newcomer with so much confidence and said, "My God, now here's a star." Strangely, while some critics in Mumbai have found Madhavan's presence and performance over-the-top, elsewhere he's being hailed as the Next Best Thing. How do we explain this dichotomy except by resorting to a conspiracy theory? I think Madhavan has the potential to disprove the naysayers who have been telling us for ages that South Indian actors don't stand a chance in hell. For one, he has the right attitude. He doesn't think of himself as God's Chosen One - www.indya.com

PROVING, ACTORS ARE BORN AND NOT CULTIVATED.
madhavanBut when you speak to him, you instinctively know he knows he's got it in him, and he's going to make sure everyone around him recognises his potential. There's the nervous energy and oodles of elan. But it's not the oh-I-know-it-all energy and elan of a jaded star who wants to convince he is still the best. What do I say about Madhavan when I already know he's going to change the way screen heroism is defined. A bit of James Dean, a bit of Rajesh Khanna and lots and lots of Madhavan - www.indya.com

MADHAVAN, THE MOST MEMORABLE MOVER

madhavanR Madhavan, who makes his debut into Boolywood as an actor in RHTDM is very nervous. The fact that he is termed as Hrithik Roshan of South, after he gained overnight popularity with Mani Ratnam's film, hardly matters at this point. He confesses: "Right now, I am very nervous and not bothered about the comparison." Diya Mirza, who makes her debut in RHTDM, says: "I had a great time shooting with Madhavan. He is such a big star but he never treated me like a newcomer." - www.indya.com

TINY TAM
madhavanAnd you thought he won't reach anywhere in Bollywood. After all, some growth on your face and high melanin content are a must for box-office success there. But three of his five Tamil films have been hits, and now Madhavan's in Mumbai with his RHTDM. All the best, buddy - www.outlookindia.com

THE MOST TALENTED ACTOR

madhavanWhatever the fate of producer Vashu Bhagnani's extremely likable romantic comedy Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, there is no denying its hero, Madhavan, has it made! As Bhagnani says: "I was repeatedly warned by so-called well-wishers against working with a 'Madrasi' hero. That, too, one who has done television. But I had a gut feeling about Madhavan. And I was right. He's the most talented actor I've seen in recent times." The Bombay buzz about Madhavan is extremely positive. Many filmmakers feel he's the most original and exciting acting talent to have hit Hindi cinema in a long, long time - www.rediff.com

SOUTHERN SENSATION
madhavanMadhavan says he worked harder and came up with a better performance in the remake. "The body language in both versions had to be completely different." But Madhavan is treading cautiously. "I'd rather do class than crass," he says, pointing to the dearth of good screenplays in Indian cinema. " If he succeeds, he will be the first actor from the south to crack the Bombay box office effectively. With an engineering degree behind him, and a proud wife sharing the limelight by his side, Madhavan is all set to redefine some prejudices against 'outsiders' who come into cinema with non-film backgrounds - www.rediff.com

WINNING SMILE AND UNASSUMING WAYS
madhavan

It's 10 P.M and Madhavan sits smugly at a Chennai hotel sipping coffee. Alaipayuthe is running to full houses in its eighth week. Earning its 6-ft, 29-year-old hero accolades both for his looks and his acting.
Q : How is this attention affecting now?
A : I have become more self-conscious. Earlier, no girl would look my way. It's become embarrassing for me to explain.
Q: So you got some 30 offers after Alaipayuthe? And another film with Mani Ratnam?
A : Yes. I have accepted five of the offers. Mani Ratnam has asked me to do his next film too, and it will be an honour - INDIA TODAY

NO AIRS, NO AFFECTATION... THAT'S MADHAVAN FOR U.

madhavanStarring opposite Ms Asia-Pacific Diya Mirza, Madhavan comes across as a different guy from the average hero of Bollywood. No airs, little affectation. And an uncanny ability to judge a thing dispassionately. On a more serious note, he states that though he has done a number of TV serials, he struck a rapport with the Hindi belt audience with "Ghar Jamai" which did pretty well in Punjab and Haryana and "Hum Dono". And, of course, the Pepsi commercial helped. For good reason, his wife accompanies him on the sets, who not only keeps an eye on her man but also looks after his finances - The Hindu dated October 05, 2001

MANLY STARE AND EASY SMILE

madhavanQ: You must be getting a lot of fan mails and love-letters in particular?
A: It is not love letters in the normal sense, but lovable letters with lot of care, good will and friendship. They are love letters with a difference.
Q: Philosophy of life
A: Live life to the fullest and relish every moment of our existence.
Q: Memorable moments in your life?
A: My marriage and release of 'Alaipayuthey' Q: On a blind date you would go out with?
A: Mother Teresa

SMOOTH OPERATOR

Going by appearances alone, Sade could've crooned 'Smooth Operator' just for him. He's got the looks of the incendiary heart breaker. But beneath those deceptive looks lies a ticking brain that's almost as rational and real as scientist's. The Elvis style widow's peak, the cheeky smile revealing charmingly imperfect teeth, sparkling brown eyes mirroring innate intelligence that stems from academia and native knowledge topped with irresistible boy-next-door charm makes Madras (and the rest of Dravidian land) mad about Madhavan - STAR DUST JUNE 2001.
