| I GOT MAIL
...From MADHAVAN's Desk |
I'm glad you've appreciated me in my first Hindi movie. I've received your fan mail, telling me how much you've liked me. I feel humbled by the praise. I also know that I've been accused of having a Shah Rukh Khan hang-up. I disagree. Just because my character stammers in the movie, it doesn't mean that I'm Shah Rukh Khan clone. Anyway, I'm flattered to be compared with him. RHTDM was an enjoyable experience. We had loads of fun shooting in New Zealand. I feel very sentimental about the movie. Just as a first-born is a favourite with its parents. I'm of proud of RHTDM. I feel anchored after my marriage. My wife has taken charge of my life. My office table is stacked with scripts that I have to read. Frankly, I want to be careful, you can't afford to make mistakes here. In the South, both my movies, Alai Payuthe and Minnale have done extremely well. So for now, life's coming up orchids - Love Maddy - FILMFARE - Dec 2001 |

| HANGING OUT WITH MADDY |
Maddy's day started at 5.30 a.m, after finishing his Yoga, Maddy takes his shower and works out for his morning session. Maddy's lovely wife Sarita was up and was chatting about his whirlwind schedules. After a quick breakfast, we drove away in Maddy's ancient but highly treasured Toyota. Wrapping up by 12.00 noon, we went home for lunch. "Curd rice is something I cannot live without," said Maddy. Maddy was like any one of us, a die-hard fan of Jackie Chan, he roared at every antic of the oriental genius on Rush Hour-II. By 6.30 p.m, Maddy went for a short run, and settled for A tea and good conversation with Sarita. After a shower, Maddy emerged smelling heavenly in a classic black shirt and blue jeans. The 3 of us drove to Snow Bowling and played 4 rounds of the game and dinner at Match Point. Hats off to Madhavan for maintaining that tough balance between a hectic professional life and an active personal one - THE HINDU, DOWNTOWN, 6TH DEC 2001

| WHY WE'RE MAD ABOUT MADHAVAN |
This star from down under dishes on what makes him weep, his secret identity and how his wife pursued him - Sarita Tanwar.
Q: What would people be surprised to know about you?
A: I was a fighter. I know how to work guns, I love them. I'm also a teetotaller. Niceness floors me. I weep... and get a runny nose when I watch emotional movies that centre around love, tragedy, patriotism, romance, pain or glory. My cupboard has a Hrithik poster pinned up by my wife Sarita (she's a big fan of his) to inspire me to work out.
Q: You're passionate about...
A: I'm a gizmo freak who buys every new gadget. I'm addicted to the Net and surf daily. I hang out in chat rooms as a troubled teenager or distraught wife.
Q: Share a pick-up strategy?
A: Women are big suckers for honesty. I don't give them cheesy lines, or try to impress them. I'm normal and real with them. That has always worked.

MADHAVAN: SMILING ASSASSIN
|
He smiles. Whatever the question or situation. Whoever is around. Whatever is his mood. Then you'll realize the reason for Madhavan's success. There might be something slightly toothy about his face. But the moment he smiles, everything vanishes. You ask Madhavan is that the secret behind his success? He does not answer. You know what he does? He lets out his radiant smile, and the question is answered. It is difficult to gauge as to how long and how far will Madhavan go. "Maybe, I must keep this paunch down, ," says the actor absent-mindedly, while insisting that he is not trying to make hay while the sun shines. "I am choosy enough and believe in doing quality stuff with thinking directors," he concludes. And what does Madhavan himself say about possible burn-outs? He does not give a straight answer. MAKE-YOUR-HEART-DO-CARTWHEELS |
"No way am I abandoning Tamil Cinema for Bollywood!" said Madhavan. So those of you who are mourning over rumours of him moving to Bollywood for good, it's time to celebrate. So what's his game plan for Bollywood? "None at all, " he avers, "I am not trying to slot myself into an image. I choose films based on the story and the screenplay. I am aware that I'm being slotted as a chocolate-boy" he ended, flashing his patented make-your-heart-do-cartwheels smile. Good luck, Maddy! - THE HINDU , Thursday, Nov. 1st 2001. |

| THE PROUD MOTHER |
Doting mother heaves sigh of relief. Madhavan taking yet another giant leap in the glamour world by kicking off his maiden Bollywood venture is like a dream come true for the Ranganathans and the promos of the film get flooded with appreciations and congratulations for the Ranganathan family. For a mother, it is always a great feeling to find her son scaling peaks one after another. Moreover it's always a pleasant experience to see your son arrest the attention of millions across the globe through breath taking performance and acting skills. This proud mother of a jubilee star seldom misses any serial or function featuring her son and remains glued to the Television. - Sunday September 16th 2001, Hindustan Times, Jamshedpur Live. |

| MADDY COOL |
Madhavan has taken Madras by storm and its Bollywood's turn now says S.Ramachandran. Madras was mad about Maddy and now its is Mumbai's turn to check him out as he debuts with the film RHTDM. "I know it has been a very long journey," says Madhavan on the sets of RHTDM. He has won the National Championship for public speaking organised by the Junior Chambers and was selected to represent India at the Young Businessmen Conference in Tokyo in 1992. One wonders how an actor who has just sauntered into celluloid could have such demand. "I have been very particular about everything. That is one reason why my market price is also good after just three films." - September 24th 2001 - MID-DAY

| A CLEAN SIXER |
The tamil boy from Jameshedpur has done it! Belying all the myths about television stars being unacceptable on the large screen, R. Madhavan delivers a clean sixer in this romantic comedy about Love's labours lost and then suddenly regained. Unconsciously, unconditionally and completely, Hindi film debutant Madhavan steals the show from all his co-stars. To the role of un-calculating misfit, Madhavan brings the swagger and élan of James Dean and the wholesome boy next-door appeal of Rajesh Khanna. | RAW ENERGY |
Well, here is a man who should give our current chocolate cream heroes a run for their cherry. He has nuances, which engage the viewer's attention long after the fleeting camera has moved on to other things. In his first foray in Hindi films, he comes up with a charged performance, bringing to his character - of a mischievous, albeit desperate lover - street combustibility. His raw energy is enthusing and his Hindi not quite flawed in the way other South Indian heroes have articulated their dialogue in the past. | MAD HOURS |
If there is one person in the film industry who is working 48 hours a day, it has to be Madhavan. Currently the dubbing for RHTDM is going on and he looked tired. "We have completed 14 reels and have another four to go," he wailed. It is not just dubbing, which is keeping this Southern heartthrob busy. "I also have to travel to other cities for the promotion of the film." And they are also doing some last minute shoot for RHTDM. And if Madhavan is dog-tired doing all this, it is not showing. Then again, working so much is not something new for this former lecturer of public speaking. For those who didn't know, in the last one-and-a-half years he has completed ten films down south, which means a film every two months. | ULTIMATE FANTASY |
They call him the Hrithik Roshan of Tamil Films. And now he is all set to make his Bollywood debut in Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein. Karishma Upadhyay meets up with R Madhavan.
Q: There is this view in the industry that actors who make it big in the south can't succeed in Bollywood. Does that make you apprehensive?
A: I am not scared by that. Whatever I do, I do it with honesty. And I have lots of dun doing my work. The fact that I may not make it really big in the industry or that "south guys" don't make it, doesn't really bother me.
Q: Who would you like to work with in the industry?
A: I would love to work with Kamal Haasan, which is the ultimate fantasy. And Amitach Bachan, Shah Rukh Khan, Anil Kapoor, Om Puri - BOMBAY TIMES, THE TIMES OF INDIA

| ROOKIE MADHAVAN STEALS THE SHOW IN RHTDM |
Hindi film debutant Madhavan steals the how from all his co-stars in producer Vashu Bhagnani's Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, a remake of the Tamil blockbuster Minnale. Madhavan simply takes over in sequences such as the one where he babbles non-stop to in Reena's attention, or when he chews on chicken with her at a restaurant though he's a vegetarian. | HERO WITH A DIFFERENCE |
Wistful and pensive one moment, cheerful and enthusiastic the next, Madhavan touches on many a subject as he talks to ZIYA US SALAM during the filming of "Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein". LEANING AGAINST the railing of Hagley's Park in Christchurch, R. Madhavan is wistful, his eyes luminous with nostalgia. "I feel sorry for today's children. They have not got a chance to discover Nature". Along with Bhagnani and Menon, the duo went across to pay floral tributes to the victims at the Cathedral Square Tower - The Hindu dated October 05, 2001
